The percentage of people without health insurance increased by 0.5% while the actual number of uninsured jumped from 44.8 million to 47 million in the same year.  The number of people with health insurance also increased in 2006 by 0.8 million.  The actual number of people covered by private insurance companies reached 207.1 million while those falling under government health insurance coverage were at 80.3 million.</p>
<p>The percentage of people under health insurance based on their employment decreased to 59.7% in 2006 from the previous percentage of 60.2% in 2005.  Meanwhile, the percentage and number of children under 18 years old that were not covered by health insurance rose to 11.7% and 8.7 million in 2006.</p>
